Following an introductory video, teaching content is divided into four modules, followed by learning activities and resources. A summary of each section and time required for completion are provided below. (Suggestions for assigning modules for independent completion or live class sessions are included in the following sections.)

Introduction video

A brief introductory video provides a foundation for the main course modules. (10 minutes)

Module 1: What is occupational formulation?

This module provides an introduction to occupational formulation and its place within the practice process (25 minutes).

Module 2: Components of occupational formulation

This module presents the three-part structure of an occupational formulation, focussing on the components used in the MOHO-based approach. An example is used to demonstrate the content and format of each section. There are workbook tasks to be completed while watching the video (40 minutes).

Module 3: Why use occupational formulation?

This module explores how occupational formulation can be useful within occupational therapy (15 minutes).

Module 4: Negotiating measurable occupational goals

This module introduces Parkinson & Brook's (2021) approach to negotiating measurable occupational goals and planning therapy following development of an occupational formulation (50 minutes).

Learning activities: Ivy’s occupational formulation

This series of short activities is designed to support consolidation of some of the core concepts used in occupational formulation. For each section of an occupational formulation there is a short quiz, followed by a quick recap and an example of what that section might look like in an occupational formulation (40 minutes).

Additional learning activities: Build familiarity & have a go

Suggestions are provided for increasing familiarity with occupational formulation concepts by reading example formulations and drafting an occupational formulation.

Course downloads & references

All the references cited within the course are listed (refer to “Suggested readings” within this Instructor information for an annotated list of key readings).

The occupational formulation and goal setting writing guide provides a summary of the key content to be included in each section of an occupational formulation.

The occupational formulation and goal setting documentation template provides headings and prompts for documenting an occupational formulation.

Links are provided to the student discussion forum where students can share experiences of using occupational formulation.
